Jaundice Is Not a Joke

When you hear about jaundice, many people think, what is this? As always, Totka or ordinary Kabiraji treatment is getting better. But as doctors, we are a little worried about jaundice. Whatever the type or cause of jaundice, it is always a serious symptom. Jaundice is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of another disease. Jaundice can be the first sign of a disease ranging from a viral infection to cirrhosis or cancer. So there is no need to neglect jaundice.

We need to know first what we mean by jaundice.

Bilirubin is one of the many components in human blood. This bilirubin originates from red blood cells.  When the red blood cells are destroyed normally or abnormally, this bilirubin is made in the liver and then flows into the blood and is excreted in the feces and urine.  When the level of this bilirubin is higher than normal, it starts to accumulate in different cells of the body.  And then the normal color of the tissue changes and turns yellowish. When the skin and eyelids turn yellow, they become visible and are diagnosed with jaundice.

Jaundice occurs for many reasons.

First, if the red blood cells are destroyed, excessive amounts of bilirubin are produced.  Raktaroga such as thalassemia. Second, jaundice occurs when there is a problem with the bilirubin plant or the liver. Such as viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, cancer. Third, if bilirubin cannot get out of the liver for any reason, jaundice occurs when obstructed. Such as gallstones or tumors.

How do you know what kind of jaundice you have?

Consider the history and symptoms of the disease because most can be identified.  At an early age, anemia with jaundice should be understood as its origin from the excessive destruction of red blood cells, which in medical terms is called hemolytic jaundice.  If the eyes and tongue turn yellow after a fever, pain in the right side of the abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, it is usually thought of as hepatitis.  If the level of jaundice continues to rise, accompanied by abdominal pain, chills, fever, and itching of the body, then the bile duct is closed and obstructive jaundice is thought to have occurred.  Another name for it is surgical jaundice as it requires surgery.

In our country, people of all ages have the highest rate of acute viral hepatitis.  At this time of coronavirus, the virus is a name of terror to everyone.  This also applies to the hepatitis virus.  These viruses are named with English letters, such as A, B, C, D and E viruses.  E-virus infection is most prevalent among adults in our country.  The A and E viruses spread through food or waterborne diseases, i.e. contaminated food or drinking water, and usually do not cause any long-term infections.  However, it can sometimes cause serious complications.  B, C and D viruses are blood-borne, which is caused by contact with contaminated blood.  These viruses have more complications and can lead to long-term infections, which can lead to various complications, including cirrhosis and cancer.

Jaundice is a serious disorder.

In case of jaundice, it is important to consult a doctor without delay.  The cause can be determined by listening to the patient's symptoms and performing some tests.  Then arrange according to reason. There is a lot of malpractice in our country with the treatment of short term viral hepatitis. Sweeping, garlanding, various kinds of Kabiraji medicine or eating herbs are popular among a class of people in our society.  These have no scientific basis in the treatment of jaundice. In addition, these kabiraji herbs often cause severe liver damage and delay treatment.

One of the good things about these viruses is that in most cases the infected person recovers on their own within a few weeks. The patient is seldom given medication according to the symptoms with full rest, normal balanced nutritious food. There is also a lot of superstition about the diet of jaundice patients, which has no basis. Patients with jaundice should drink more glucose or sugar syrup, eat sugarcane juice, eat turmeric, take frequent baths or eat fish and meat - none of which is correct.  He can eat all the common foods, but it is better to avoid excess oil and fat.  Food should be easy to digest, healthy and pure.  If you do not feel well within a few weeks or if any abnormalities occur, it is important to consult a specialist without delay. These abnormalities can be loss of consciousness (encephalopathy), vomiting or black stools, excessive weakness, abnormal behavior, etc.

Like many other diseases, viral hepatitis is preventable. Some common hygiene practices, such as personal hygiene, healthy food, clean drinking water, not taking blood from infected people or not using other people's used blades, syringes, etc., are one of the ways to prevent it. There are effective vaccines against A and B viruses, which everyone should take according to the advice. B virus vaccines have been included in government vaccination programs.
